I developed a love and appreciation for photography whilst travelling and purchased my first digital camera – a Sony Cybershot (3.2 megapixels, DSC-P5) in Japan 2002 and used this to take photos of the rest of my travels in Australia.
When I returned to the UK, I reviewed all my photos and my ‘point and shoot’ efforts seemed to disappoint – they lacked a certain “je ne sais quoi”. In an attempt to learn more about the tips, tricks and techniques that could help improve my photography, I signed up for the City & Guilds Photography course at Morley College.
For a whole year, I religiously turned up for the evening classes on Tuesdays with my 35mm manual SLR -Praktica BSM electonica (I borrowed my boyfriend’s, then bought one of my own for £20 on ebay) to learn about depth of field, composition, film types, shutter speed, etc. It was a brilliant course which helped me to think about my shots and improve my composition, but it was also a welcome distraction from my day job.
I saved up the pennies and the pounds and upgraded to a digital SLR in 2006. However, I still stick my trusted Sony Cybershot (7.2 megapixels DSC-W70) in my handbag when it isn’t convenient to carry my SLR!
